Brief Biography

Veli-Pekka Räty (born 1961) works as a photographer and media designer, and co-owner of Three Images.

His primary design and research interest and areas of expertise include visual communication, visual culture, interactivity and games.

From the beginning of 2007 he designs for the Lappset Group’s fitness exercise park named Dynamic Garden. The intention of the project is to produce a fitness and outdoor exercise park, available for all, suitable for people of all ages, and enhanced with technology. The project ends in 2009.

In his previous position, he was the manager of the research group ‘Intuitive Environments’ at VTT Information Technology located in Tampere, Finland. He joined VTT full time in 1985. VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland is a governmental owned research centre with 3000 experts. VTT Information Technology employs 450 experts.

The Intuitive Environments group’s interests were new concepts to use computers such as interactive bodily and spatial environments and their applications in everyday life. The applications included e.g. communication, sports and games. The research themes related closely to ubiquitous and wearable computing, augmented & mixed reality, and 3D user interfaces. They applied user-centred design (UCD) approach in their research.

 

Veli-Pekka attended the Tampere University of Technology where he majored in Digital & Computer Systems and Biomedical Engineering. He received a Master of Science in Electrical Engineering in 1988. He continued his studies at the Department of Graphic Design of the University of Art and Design in Helsinki. He received his Licentiate of Arts and Doctor of Arts degrees in Art and Design in 1996 and 1999 respectively.

His doctoral dissertation examined visual communication in computer games for children. He was the highest ranking Doctoral candidate at the Conferment of Degrees at the University of Art and Design in Helsinki in 2001.
